Getting this site up and running - 2021-10-12

How it is built

I decided to build this site using emacs and org-mode. I followed a tutorial from SystemCrafters. It is a really succinct tutorial that just gives you the basics to get started. I can see myself writing some elisp to auto generate the main page, generate new posts, and create headers/footers. I will also likely add my own css file at some point. Right now it is just fun.

Why did I build it?

There was a recent episode of the Ubuntu Touch Q&A where they talked about needing people to contribute to the project in order for it to continue if any of the main contributors disappears. I felt convicted to do something about it and I think a blog might be the motivation that I need to actually do it. I want to document the steps I take, from finding an issue, learning about the problem, to submitting a fix. I don't have much experience with contributing to Ubuntu Touch, but I'm sure I can find ways to help.

What to expect

Expect irregular posts, I have a young family, I have a full-time job doing web development, have a garden, and plan to get chickens. I don't have a lot of free time for this type of project, but hopefully I'll be able to get one post out a month. I might use this blog for other purposes too.

How is it hosted?

I decided to go with netlify for hosting. I started using using there service at work and really liked it. Normally I would like to self-host, but that isn't really an option for me (LTE internet with double-NAT). In reality if netlify is no longer an option I can just host it somewhere else, it is just static html files. I have this all in a git repo hosted on a private gitlab repo. I might make it public sometime, but I don't know if I will 🤷 I just don't know why anyone would want to see it.

Let's see how this goes
